J.J.C. Spohler was born in Holland into an artistic family. His father was the well-know landscape artist J.J. Spohler (1811-1866) and his brother, J.F. Spohler (1853-1894) painted town scenes.

Spohler was a pupil of his father Jan. He specialised in the familiar subject of Dutch canals, depicting them both in summer and winter. His summer compositions were filled with sailing boats and windmills, ferrymen, people walking and fishermen. The winter subjects were full of skaters, toboggans and sledges. He uses Romantic motifs in his compositions, often creating a diagonal to lead the eye to the background or using a small jetty at the front of the canvas to break the foreground.

Spohler’s work is a very pleasing insight into the life of the times and the landscape of 19th century Holland. His work sold well during his lifetime and is sought after by collectors today
