Hermanus Koekkoek

Hermanus Koekkoek Sr. was born in Middelburg on the 13th March 1815 and he was a founder member of the great Koekkoek family dynasty of painters. His father was the artist Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek (1778 – 1851) under whom he trained and his three brothers were also renowned painters. His sons were Hermanus Koekkoek Jr. (1836 – 1902) and Willem Koekkoek (1839 – 1895) and they were also highly accomplished artists.

Hermanus worked in both Durgerdam and Amsterdam between 1832 and 1873 and he was made a member of the Royal Academy of Amsterdam in 1840 and elected to the Rotterdam society in 1841.
The artist exhibited regularly at the Living Artists exhibitions in Amsterdam and he even exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1876 with a work entitled, “A fresh breeze on the French Coast” and is recorded as living at 16 Charlotte Street.

Hermanus Koekkoek Sr. specialised in painting seascapes. In these, he achieved great renown for his vivid and atmospheric skies that became the trademark of his works.

Hermanus Koekkoek Sr. died on the 5th November 1882 in Haarlem. His works are in many prominent and private and public collections including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Boymans in Rotterdam, Glasgow City Art Gallery, Kelvingrove, the Mappin Art Gallery, Sheffield and the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.
