Born in 1858, Henry Hillier lived in London and studied at the St. Martin’s School of Art. He started his working life as an illustrator for the Illustrated London News but by the age of 23 he had become known as a landscape painter. From 1923 Hillier exhibited many of his paintings in the USA, especially in Chicago when his work was in great demand. His paintings were also popular in Canada and were hung in many leading clubs there and in the USA.
Hillier painted mainly in the South East of England, particularly in Surrey, Sussex and along the Thames where he frequently stayed at Goring and Streatley. He also painted in the Worcestershire area, Wales and Scotland. His Scottish works were usually signed ‘H.D. Hillier’ and are far fewer in number than his English scenes which he signed ‘Henry H. Parker’. Consequently the Scottish views are very sought after and quite rare. His works are to be found in museums in Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand and Britain.
