Walter James Shaw

1851 - 1933

Walter James Shaw was a painter of coastal and inshore scenes. He was born at Westbury-on-Trym near Bristol but spent most of his working life living at Salcombe in Devon.

Shaw was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy and elsewhere between 1878 and1904. The majority of his paintings were gale subjects and dramatic sea pieces on and around the Cornish and Devon coasts.

Titles at the Royal Academy include The Storm and The Ebb-tide on the Bar from 1880 and Salcombe Bar from 1904. He also has two paintings at Bristol Art Gallery entitled Bantham Sands and Salcombe Bar in Bad Weather. Back to list
