Karel Frans Phillippeau

1825 - 1897

Karel Frans Philippeau was born in Amsterdam on 31st August, 1825.

He studied painting at the Academy in Amsterdam and Antwerp and he travelled to Rome and spent time there. His stay in Rome was important in his development as an artist and many of his paintings show an Italianate influence both in subject matter and style. Philippeau specialised in painting delightful genre scenes, often showing family groups in outdoor settings. He uses a rich palatte and he was a talented draughtsman.

The artist died in Prinsenhaag on 15th April, 1897
