John James Wilson
1818 - 1875
Born in London, John James Wilson was the son and pupil of the well known marine artist, John (Jock) Wilson, RSA (1774 - 1855). Perhaps as a reaction to his father's tuition, John James Wilson's did not paint any marine subjects before 1849. However, in later life his attitude and interests changed and after 1849 he painted little else.John James Wilson exhibited at all of the major London Galleries. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1835 and at the British Institute in 1834. He also exhibited a large number of pictures at the Suffolk Street Galleries. He finally ceased showing his work in public two years prior to his death in 1873.
