Ellen Ladell

b. 1853

Ellen Maria Levett was born in Yarmouth in 1853. Very little is known of her life but she married the well-known still-life artist Edward Ladell of Colchester in 1878. Ellen was also an artist and the couple moved to Exeter where they had a studio at 20 Queen's Street.

Ellen's artistic talent blossomed during her marriage to Edward. She strove to emulate the works of her husband, painting in the same realistic style and using the same motifs. She usually signed her paintings with her name in full whereas her husband Edward used the EL monogram. Both artists undoubtedly collaborated on many paintings and all their works show a high level of dedication and technical refinement.

Edward Ladell died in 1886 and was survived by his wife Ellen. It is unknown when she died. Back to list
