Carl Frederik Sorensen

1818 - 1879

Carl Frederik Sorensen was a Danish marine artist, born in Besser on the island of Samsa on February 8th 1818. In 1846 he was granted permission to accompany a Danish frigate (which was to cross the Mediterranean) and to sketch the landfalls. It is doubtless that it was Sorensen's first hand experience aboard sea faring vessels, that he achieved such excellence in his work. Indeed Sorensen is widely considered as one of the finest Danish marine artists and his depictions of boats, harbours and seascapes are portrayed with such life-like precision that one can identify his special relationship and understanding of life on the sea.

There is a collection of Sorensen's work at the Royal Naval Museum, Copenhagen. Hismarine painting is also represented in public collections in Oslo and Stockholm.

He died in Copenhagen on the 24th January 1879. Back to list
