Carl Reichert was born in Vienna, Austria on August 27 1836 and died in Gretz on April 5 1918. Reichert came from a family of artists. He was the son of the portrait and animal painter Heinrich Reichert, the brother of Heinrich Reichert who painted theatre scenery and the nephew of Bonfiaz Heinrich and Franz Heinrich Reichert.
He was a student at the Academy of Design in Gretz with J. Turner and E. Chr. Moser. He then studied in Munich in 1866 and in Rome in 1867 with Ludwig Joh. Passini and Anton Romako.
Reichert is best known as a genre and animal painter, typically small-scale highly detailed portraits of dogs. His most popular works are often humorous depictions of dogs and puppies at play.
