Biography

Charles Joseph Grips studied painting at the Academy of Antwerp.  He travelled extensively and worked in Grave and Jette before finally settling in Brussels. Between 1861 and 1878 Grips exhibited his paintings on Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and Germany.

He specialised in interior scenes, often kitchens with highly detailed depictions of still life.  In this painting he paints a doorway with light emanating from a courtyard beyond, a traditional motif used by some of the great 17th century masters such as Pieter de Hooch.  Grips often painted on panel and his work is usually of fine detail and quality.

Museums:  Art Association, Montreal, Canada.
