Biography

Gilbert Scott Wright was born on July 24th at Headingley near Leeds, the younger brother of the artist George Wright (1860-1942).

He was a self-taught artist, though no doubt he received advice from his elder brother (with whom he is thought to have worked until about 1925).  During this period they collaborated on a number of works that were used for decorating calendars.  A professional, though friendly, rivalry developed.

Gilbert was an excellent draughtsman and as well as painting horses he painted figures very well.  He particularly enjoyed painting coaching and hunting scenes, racing and polo as well as costume pictures.  During the 1930s his paintings were used by the Princess Royal for her Christmas cards.Gilbert Wright worked closely with his sister Louise in fashion work, and helped her illustrate Harrod's Fur Catalogue before the transition to photography. L Hamilton-Renwick was a pupil of his for some time.  He lived for in Oxford and along Brompton Road, London before settling in Richmond, Surrey where he died.

Exhibited: the Royal Academy from 1909
