William Huggins was an animal and landscape painter from Liverpool. He came from an artistic background and was brother to the artists Anne, Sarah and Samuel Huggins.

In 1847 he became an associate of the Liverpool Academy and in 1850 a member. Huggins was primarily known for his studies of animals - lions, horses, donkeys, poultry, etc, and was also known to depict them within historical scenes, such as David in the Lion's Den and Una and the Lion. He developed a very individual technique painting pale, transparent colours over a white background.

In 1861 he moved to Chester, and in 1876 took a house at  Bettws-y-Coed, Wales. He later returned to Chester, where he died in 1884.
