Biography

Alfred Augustus Glendening Senior was a London landscape painter, who began life as a railway clerk. He exhibited at the Royal Academy during the years 1865-1903, and at the British Institute, which was established as a rival to the Royal Academy at Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery in Pall Mall. The Institute aimed to encourage and reward the talents of the artists of the United Kingdom and it organised loan exhibitions of Old Masters for students to copy. His subjects include views of the Thames, the Southern Counties, Wales and Scotland.  His son and pupil was Alfred Glendening Junior. Both painted broadly realistic landscapes, in a style similar to that of Alfred de Breanski.

Exhibited: Royal Academy; British Institute; Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street.
