Sophie Anderson was born in Paris in 1823. Her early years were spent in rural France but with the outbreak of the 1848 Revolution she moved with her parents to America. Although largely self taught she had briefly trained under the artist Steuben in Paris and in America she established herself as a successful portrait painter. She married the English artist Walter Anderson.
In 1854 they came to England and lived in London amongst other places. However, in 1871 she moved to Capri because of ill health but returned in 1894 settling in Falmouth.
She is best known for painting scenes of Victorian childhood; her most famous work being ‘No Walk Today’. However, her works cover a wide range of genres including historical subjects and still life. She exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery, the Society of British Artists, the British Institute and the Royal Academy. The museums of Birmingham, Leicester and the Walker Gallery in Liverpool have examples of her work in their collections.
