He studied painting with the great Barbizon master Harpignies and also Jules Lefebvre and P. Billet. Levis was a very competent artist from an early age and he exhibited his first painting at the Salon at the age of 26. He was a member of the Salon des Artistes Francais in Paris from 1888 gaining several medals here including a distinction in 1895, a third place medal in 1896 and a gold medal in 1927. Like Harpignies, Levis dedicated his life to painting the French countryside. His landscapes were of northern France and Brittany and were often painted on a small scale. The artist used delicate brush strokes and pastel hues to create fresh and atmospheric works which were charming in their detail. He captured the French landscape perfectly.
