painting by Julie Askew
As a graduate of Scientific Illustration (BA Hon, Middlesex University) Julie has an important grounding in anatomy and the understanding of her subject from inside out. Her first trip to Africa cemented her artistic desire to paint wildlife in its natural environment. She greatly admired the work of the American and Canadian artists. The chance of a trip to Montana enabled her to see the grandeur of the landscape and its wildlife for herself. She was introduced to the late Paco Young who she is proud to have called both mentor and friend. His fantastic painterly style and plein-air approach combined with the beauty of Montana changed her work forever and the area has become her main source of inspiration and most frequent travel destination. Despite her young age, Julie is already considered one of England’s leading wildlife artists. She has work in the permanent collection of the Nature in Art Museum, UK and is represented in the UK by Burlington Paintings and in the USA by Frameworks Gallery, Bozeman. Julie also exhibits in Paris, New York and Galway. She is a signature member of the Society of Animal Artists, USA and Artists for Conservation, Canada. Her book ‘A Voyage Round the World in Paintings’ featuring over 200 of her artworks and sketches covering her extensive travels was published last year.
