His grandfather was Barend Kornelis Koekkoek (1803 - 1862) and his father was Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek (1778 - 1851). Hermanus Koekkoek Sr was taught to paint by his father and in turn passed the tradition on to his sons Hermanus Koekkoek Jr and Willem Koekkoek. Hermanus Koekkoek Sr specialised in marine paintings. He exhibited widely and was a member of the Royal Academy of Amsterdam and the Rotterdam Society. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. His work can be found in many museums including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and BACK TO LIST
