1820 - 1887 A Calm Morning Stock code: S3790 Signed and Dated 1869 Oil on Canvas 11 x 18 inches / 28 x 45.7 cms Price category: D: £15,000 - £20,000 The Humberside artist Henry Redmore is recognised as one of Britain's greatest marine painters. His earliest works show the influence of the Scottish marine painter, William Anderson (1757-1837) who resided in Hull for some time. John Ward (1798-1849), another great marine painter from Hull, may well have taught Redmore. Many of Redmore's works depict shipping in the Humber estuary, off the Yorkshire coast and in the harbours of Whitby and Scarborough. He also visited the South West Coast of England, and pictures are recorded by him of Torbay and several other ports on the Devon and Cornish coast. It is probable that he travelled to Holland and Germany, with Hull playing an important role in trade between Britain and the continent during the 19th century. The influence of the great Dutch 17th century masters such as Willem Van de Velde can be clearly seen in many of Redmore's paintings. The serenity and stillness in the paintings along with the artist's great sense of colour, and high standard of draughtsmanship make the works of very high quality. The attention Redmore paid to detail shows that he was a careful observer of shipping activity between the Humber and the continent, and helps to create the unique atmosphere in his work.
