Charles Thomas Bale was a still life painter who worked in London during the second half of the 19th century. Little is known of the artist's life, except that he lived at 9 Poland Street in London in 1872. Records show that he exhibited his paintings between the years 1866 and 1890 but there is no official note of the date of his death.
Bale predominantly painted fruit but he frequently incorporated pottery, glass and game into his compositions. He was a good draughtsman and he enjoyed showing his skill in painting different textures.
It is likely that Bale would have known other still life artists of the period such as George Lance (1802-1864) and William Duffield (1816-1863), both of whom were exhibiting their works at the same time and his work bears their influence.
