Marhsall Brown studied art at the Royal Institute, Edinburgh and the Royal Scottish Academy Life School. He received the Chalmers Bursary and Stewart Prize in 1888 and was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1909 and a Member in 1928. He was also made a Member of the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society in 1929. He painted in Holland and France including such works as 'A Breton Washing Pool' and 'Concarneau'. In addition, he also worked widely in Scotland and spent some time living in Edinburgh and at Cockburnspath in Berwickshire.
William Marshall Brown died on the 26th April, 1936.
