Advice on Selling
Few will have missed the newspaper coverage of the Auction House "collusion scandal" - this has highlighted their increased commission charges in recent years. The combined commission from both a buyer and seller on an item at auction under £30,000 is in excess of 30%. On top of this, there are charges for catalogue illustrations and insurance - with no guarantee of a sale. It is not surprising that many vendors are looking at alternative avenues.
Burlington Paintings are willing to appraise paintings from digital images and give an estimate of value. The value will be based on our view of the market along with the recent sale of comparative paintings. The value could then be confirmed on viewing the picture, and we are happy to arrange for the paintings to be shipped to the Gallery for viewing (via our FedEx account).
Although we are happy to sell on commission (at rates well below the auction houses) or on an agreed net price basis. It often suits clients to agree an outright sale to the gallery. In this way clients have an immediate guaranteed sale at a fair market price with no hidden costs.
