Selling a Picture
Many Clients contact us with a view to selling a painting. Listed here are some examples of paintings we have recently purchased from new clients through our website. Below you can also find advice on how we appraise paintings for sale.

Examples of Purchase

We are often offered paintings by clients throughout the world, a recent example being this stunning painting by Alfred de Breanski Sr. of the Brander Pass, Scotland. In this case, we were contacted by a private client from Hawaii after they found our site though an internet search engine. This fine painting had been handed down through 3 generations, and originally exported to Hawaii from Scotland in the 1920s. The owners shipped the painting to us at the Gallery for appraisal, after which we agreed a price and paid the client by wire transfer.

Alfred de Breankski Sr. 1852 - 1910,  An Evening in September 1910 - At the Foot of the Brander Pass N.B., Signed, Inscribed on Reverse, Oil on Canvas, 32 x 48 inches.

Advice on Selling

Few will have missed the newspaper coverage of the Auction House "collusion scandal" - this has highlighted their increased commission charges in recent years. The combined commission from both a buyer and seller on an item at auction under £30,000 is in excess of 30%. On top of this, there are charges for catalogue illustrations and insurance - with no guarantee of a sale. It is not surprising that many vendors are looking at alternative avenues.

Burlington Paintings are willing to appraise paintings from digital images and give an estimate of value. The value will be based on our view of the market along with the recent sale of comparative paintings. The value could then be confirmed on viewing the picture, and we are happy to arrange for the paintings to be shipped to the Gallery for viewing (via our FedEx account).

Although we are happy to sell on commission (at rates well below the auction houses) or on an agreed net price basis. It often suits clients to agree an outright sale to the gallery. In this way clients have an immediate guaranteed sale at a fair market price with no hidden costs.
