Archibald Russell Watson Allan

1878-1959

Archibald Russell Watson Allan was a Scottish painter who specialised in watercolour and pastel.
Allan was born in Glasgow on 6th March 1878. He was educated at the Collegiate School in Glasgow and the Greenock Academy. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art under John Spiers (a highly respected Glaswegian portrait painter) and at Julian's and Colorossi's in Paris.
In 1937 Allan was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy. He lived for many years in Stirling and died on 24th April 1959. His work has been widely exhibited in public collections in Scotland and the North of England. The still life entitled 'Summer Flowers' is executed with a fluidity and strength of colour, typical of the Glasgow School.
